Telugu is one of the most popular languages on JioSaavn. This year has been a joy ride of different types of music which was supported by big and small budget films and a lot of Indie releases from some amazingly talented Independent musicians.
While the music of films like ‘Vakeel Saab’, ‘Krack’, ‘Uppena’ and ‘Jathi Ratnalu’ kept us entertained in the first half of the year; we also witnessed some extremely popular folk tracks like ‘Bullettu Bandi’ by Mohana Bhogaraju which went viral and trending releases like ’Bavalla Na Bavalla’ by Shirisha, which also had a very groovy folk-y flavour.
Undoubtedly, Sid Sriram is our Telugu artist of the year. With more than 15 smash hits of this year sung by this amazingly talented vocalist, there’s clearly no holding him back. With songs like ‘Okey Oka Lokam’, ‘Ye Kannulu Chudani Chitrame’, ‘Leharaayi’, ‘Srivalli’, ‘So So Ga’, ‘Yemunnave Pilla’ and ‘Idhi Chala Baagundhi Le’, 2021 was clearly the year of Sid Sriram!
Two Telugu artists who clearly stood head and shoulders above the rest in 2021, are Mangli with superb songs like ‘Saranga Dariya’, ‘Bujjulu Bujjulu’ and ‘Jwala Reddy’ and the extremely talented Ram Miriyala with hits like ‘Chitti’, the title track of the movie ‘Bheemla Nayak’ and ‘Puttene Prema’ to name a few.
This year we also witnessed some of the most esteemed music directors like Devi Sri Prasad, Thaman S, M. M. Keeravani and Gopi Sunder, experimenting with their sound. They gave us superbly versatile albums like ‘Pushpa – The Rise’, ‘Bheemla Nayak’, ‘RRR’ and ‘Most Eligible Bachelor’ which were like a breath of fresh air to their already massive fanbases.
‘Oh Kshnam Navvune Visuru’ by Vijay Bulganin ft. Meghana and Enno Ennenno by Yasaswi Kondepudi, Aditi Bhavaraju are a couple of tracks which left their indelible mark on 2021 with their addictively soothing melodies. We also had a few surprises along the way with artists like Manish Kumar and Sunil Kashyap, coming out with ‘Malupu’ and ‘Romantic’ respectively, that continue to push the boundaries of the Telugu music industry. It will be remiss of us not to mention bands like Chowraasta and Kalakaarii who have also released some rocking music this year to the great reception of new and old fans alike.
The Telugu Hip Hop scene also saw some notably great releases from artists like Roll Rida, Blaaze and Sunny Austin adding a dash of colour to the industry which is expanding rapidly.
Special mention goes out to songs like ‘Jala Jala Jalapaatham Nuvvu’ by Jaspreet Jasz, Shreya Ghoshal, ‘Laahe Laahe’ by Harika Narayan and Sahithi Chaganti, ‘Thattukolede’ by Sindhuja Srinivasan, ‘Dooram Karigina’ by Sid Sriram and Karthik Kodakandla and ‘Inkosaari Inkosaari’ by Shreya Ghoshal and Kaala Bhairava which have performed extremely well on JioSaavn, making their way to our year end charts by some stellar numbers.
Social media played a very important role this year in driving overall music consumption in the industry. A lot of songs became certified hits this year due to their ‘viral’ quotient which was achieved due to the continuous and consistent buzz on the various social media platforms. We have also seen the music of a lot of movies from other languages being dubbed in Telugu this year which have also performed extremely well with our users.
The pandemic brought some interesting challenges to those in the music industry, with many artists testing their boundaries and experimenting more, which resulted in a huge uptick in the number of independent releases. We are all eagerly looking forward to the fresh new directions and heights that the Telugu music industry is on course to achieve in the coming years.
