A lot has happened in the Tamil music industry in 2021, a year that has not only witnessed blockbuster songs from big films, but also hits from non-film and independent albums as well. Let’s take a look back on these past 12 months in Tamil music with its most notable genres and artists along with some of our favourite playlist artworks from the past year.
Top Songs – Enjoy Enjami
‘Enjoy Enjami’ is the biggest Tamil viral sensation of 2021. One of the very first non-filmy tracks that gave us numbers that are comparable to a movie album, this catchy tune is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, sung by Dhee with rap verses by newcomer Arivu. Driven by social media the song was able to crossover into the mainstream market of other languages as well, with a lot of global music fans now eagerly awaiting this amazing duo’s next new offering.
Top Songs – Mangalyam
The music of Simbu starrer ‘Eeshwaran’ did very well in the market with a special mention going out to the song ‘Mangalyam’ – a folk number sung by the star himself, which turned out to be an absolute smasher. Thaman’s overall musical score for the movie was also very impressive.
Top Song – ‘Jai Sulthan’
Composed by the musical duo Vivek-Mervin, ‘Jai Sulthan’ from the movie of the same name, is a super fun peppy number, performed by one of the brightest stars in the industry right now Anirudh Ravichander. A comical song that speaks about friendship, companionship and loyalty, this perfect Kuthu Dance number has performed extremely well since release and has easily made its way to our 2021 year end charts and party playlists.
Emerging Artist – Stephen Zechariah
Stephen Zechariah, an Indian origin Singapore based Tamil artist, is responsible for one of the surprise smashers of 2021 with ‘Adi Penne’ . A song which made music lovers go gaga on social media. The track exploded on the charts thanks to virality with audiences making tons of short format videos on ‘Adi Penne’ this past year. Most definitely Stephen is a promising new talent to lookout for in the near future. Please feel free to explore other hits by the same artist, in the link below.
Top Artist – Anirudh
Anirudh, beyond a shadow of a doubt is one of the most popular singers and music composers of South Indian entertainment industry. The artist has not only composed tracks for films like ‘Kaathu Vaakala Rendu Kadhal’ and ‘Doctor’ this year but has also lent his voice to super popular songs like ‘Jai Sulthan’ , ‘So Baby’, ‘Bodhai Kanamae’ and many other certified hits of 2021. From emotional love songs to kuthu dance hits, his range is limitless; Anirudh slays it all.
Top Artist – Sid Sriram
No year end roundup will ever be complete without Sid Sriram who has continued to impress everyone with his unique way of singing and amazing talent. Already boasting of some amazing award winning songs over the past few years, 2021 has clearly once again been his year, with chartbusters like ‘Idhuvum kadandhu Pogum’ , ‘Saara Kaatre’ and his latest hit song being ‘Srivalli’ from Pushpa, which has performed exceptionally well making its way to the top of our year end charts.
Top Artist – Yuvan Shankar Raja
Yuvan is one of the most notable musical geniuses that the Tamil music industry has ever produced. On an editorial side note, his music gives me goosebumps all the time. He is a truly gifted music composer and an amazing singer as well. It seems like he pours his heart and soul into each and every album that he does, with some exceptional results. He’s a versatile, trend setter, who has his finger on the exact pulse of the public. In 2021 he was the man behind some of the biggest and high performing Tamil releases among which are STR’s ‘Manaadu’, Thala Ajith’s ‘Valimai’ and Santhanam’s ‘Dikkiloona’.
The number of Indi-Pop and Indie Tamil songs seems to have grown exponentially since the pandemic due to the dearth of mainstream movie albums by big production houses. With stellar hits like ‘Enjoy Enjami’, ‘Adi Penne’, ‘Kutty Pattas’, ‘Adipoli’, ‘Semma Bodha’, ‘Yathi Yathi’ which continued to win over new listeners all year, these songs have easily made their mark on our year end charts. One can only hope that this trend will continue, with Tamil music fans getting to discover even more diamonds in the rough in the near future.
